Cracked Tooth Syndrome, and Treatments

Often occurs in teeth that have been filled and is due to weakening of the remaining tooth structure by decay. Hairline fractures can occur at the corner of the filling, leading to the development of cracks. Some people respond to stress by grinding their teeth (bruxism). This can lead to cracking in filled or unfilled teeth. If untreated, the crack will spread (like a crack in your car windshield) and the tooth can break off or, the crack will reach the root/nerve chamber. Aggravated nerves can cause sensitivity to heat/cold and chewing. The result can be pain and the potential need for root canal treatment or extraction.

Treating Cracked Tooth Syndrome:
To prevent tooth deterioration, the crack must be immobilized and splinted. The most effective solution is a “cap” or “crown” bonded over the entire tooth, sealing the cracks and lessening the ability of bacteria to reach the tooth and cause decay. However, despite the best treatment, almost 10% of cracked teeth have nerves that go on to die. Even with the crown in place, the tooth can still move slightly, allowing further damage to occur. If the nerve dies, an abscess will probably develop, leading to the need for root canal treatment.
